Scientific Ways To Get Good Grades

By Sanam Marjan

The first on the list is to make a schedule. Mark the time that you can devote entirely to your studies. Plan out the subjects and the lacking you have in specific topics.

Step one- General

Study at your own pace

Find what works the best for you. Do not try matching up to someone else’s pace, and just follow your own.

Get some rest

Exhaustion slows down cognitive function, so your body needs rest, and getting sleep is crucial for mental health. That is why it is important to get a healthy schedule. And avoid not sleeping for 7 or more hours the night before an exam.

Try to limit pre-studying naps to 15 or 20 minutes at a time, and upon waking up, go for a light exercise to prepare your body and brain for work.

Avoid distractions

Make sure your notifications are not blaring. As when you pull yourself away from studies to check on notifications, you will have to reinforce your brain again to continue with studies. Try to keep any form of devices threatening to distract out and away from your reach.

Relax

Stress makes it harder to learn and retain information, so try to clear your head before you begin. Writing down a list of tasks you need to get done and performing light exercise may help to clear your head before you begin studying.

Step two- Creating the perfect study space

Pick the perfect place to study

  • You need to pick a place with delicate balance: a place that is comfortable but not so relaxing that you end up falling asleep. Avoid places where you usually sleep or take naps. Try to surround yourself with peace and quiet in order to help you concentrate.

  • Listen to fast tempo music as it increases cognitive performance.

  • Eat breakfast before studying as it increases short term cognitive ability as well as alertness. And keep snacks such as lean deli meat, nuts, apple slices and dark chocolate at arm’s reach.

  • Hydrate as researches showed that people who brought a drink into the exam hall did better than those who didn’t. Try to keep a bottle of water at hand so that you do not have to leave in between your study sessions.

Step three- Effective study skills

  • Highlight the key concepts: try to jot down notes along the text. And start your revision by viewing the highlighted sections.

  • Summarize: stick to the key points while making a summary. After writing down the summary, read it aloud in order to reinforce the information.

  • Create flashcards: write down keywords on one side and write the answer on the other. Quiz yourself on the flashcards and use active recall to answer as it is a great way to continue reinforcement.

  • Retain information in smaller chunks: it is easier to stick in your mind than it is in you mind to remember

  • Make your own study sheet: try to condense information and write it down in your own words. Using different colored fonts and lettering will help you to picture the information later.

  • Be a teacher: pretend you are teaching someone while going over the concepts and materials. Reciting it like a presentation aloud to someone else will help engrave the details in your mind.

  • Know when to stop: studies are indeed important but so is your mental and physical help. Have a social life, take care of yourself and exercise in order to prevent burnouts.

  • Start with the toughest assignments: get through the hard tasks first as they are the ones requiring more attention and mental strain.
