Not all STEM careers require a college degree; careers such as that of electronic assembler or pharmacy technician need a two-year degree or an industrial certification. Yet, a vast majority of STEM jobs require education right after high school. Skills such as critical thinking and problem solving implemented by STEM education are applicable for most demanded careers.


A brief list of STEM careers:

  • Medical doctors

  • Engineer

  • Scientist

  • Agriculture

  • Computer technicians

  • Architects

  • Electricians

  • Machinists, etc


Preparing for STEM careers


You can gain STEM skills through academic courses or even from your hobbies!


To earn STEM skills academically, get started by taking classes in high school or college.

Take classes such as:

  • Algebra

  • Calculus

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Physics

  • Economics, etc


Join activities such as:

  • Community organizations with fundraising events require budgeting and math skills.

  • Participation in a data collection project to gain experience in writing surveys and conducting interviews.

  • Teach youth at a science summer camp or after-school program.

  • Job shadow or intern with figures in STEM fields.

  • Join math or science club and participate in science fair

  • Learn computer application



5 tips on how to succeed in STEM Careers


1) Be inquisitive: always inquire and be curious, exploring to its depth


2) Adapt and grow: STEM careers evolve constantly by their nature, learn to accept and adapt to the changes. “Love your career. It should be more than a paycheck. It should be a passion that keeps you engaged and pushes you to grow.”- Mary Garcia, Executive director, digital design and user experience.


3) Find a mentor: search for mentors to challenge you and help you grow. Look for lessons and simultaneously help others in order to gain leadership capabilities.


4) Continue to learn: be open to new opportunities and learning.


5) Have perspective: learn to take innovative approaches to solving problems.
