The Science Behind Manifestation

By Anoushka Ghosh

“Manifesting this right now” or “claimed!” are phrases often used today as a part of the new culture of believing in bringing about positive outcomes through thought or belief. The concept of manifestation has become increasingly popular across all social media platforms - allowing for teenagers to have an idea of how to take charge of their lives. Manifestation across all social media platforms involve manifesting one’s wishes into reality by reciting them aloud, writing it repetitively in a journal or thinking about them optimistically as if it is tangible and real in a way. Yet, can these practices really will thoughts into existence?

Manifestation is no new concept. In fact, the origin of the universe being created by one’s thoughts dates back to the 2nd Century BC. Furthermore, manifestation is not limited to Hinduism and can be found in many other religions and countries. Hinduism begins with the same thing in common, they all start with “The Vedas” which are four collections of texts involving the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda. The word “manifestation” in the context of Hinduism means “a state of consciousness in which one’s awareness of different levels of existence is considerably enhanced.” Hinduism most often involves the use of meditation through yoga with the sound of “Om” that is actually “AUM”. AUM typically involves the different manifestations of Gods that we have united with: A is Brahma involving the Physical plane which is the wake state of mind; U is Vishnu which is the Astral plane that is the dream state of the mind for manifestation; M is Shiva which is the Causal Plane that is the dreamless state and destruction; the fourth unspoken sound - Turiya that is beyond the universe. Therefore, through mediation on Brahman, one can will anything into existence.

Yet, is there some understanding that manifestation may have more involvement of the people who are manifesting rather than the universe’s cosmic energy? Dr. Joe Vitale, author of bestselling book, “The Attractor Factor” dives deep into the subjects of brain science and the law of attraction. “Brain psychology says you will get more of whatever you focus on in life - your brain will look for things to make that focus come true,” Dr. Joe Vitale said. In reality, the positive affirmations that we bring about through repetition would come into reality by training your brain to seek out that wish and make it real. Our subconscious is a network of neurons in the brainstem called the reticular activating system, and this is programmed for survival. Through the conscious decision of what you want, you trigger your RAS to respond to that desire and it will lead to the brain to look for solutions to fulfil that desire.

Interestingly, there is belief that consciousness is the product of the organisation of energetic activity in the brain. The laws of energy suggest that it can be converted, but not destroyed. Is it possible that our brain energy brought about physical processes to occur such as manifesting our reality? It is a stretch of an idea, but it is wholly possible. Our brain only accounts for 2% of our whole body mass, and still it requires a large proportion of energy. This same energy is used to fuel neural signalling and information processing.

There is a direct connection between energy in the brain and consciousness. A study conducted by Robert Schulman and colleagues showed that through the use of anaesthesia, the energy consumption on cerebral metabolism reduced progressively as compared to those who are awake. It suggests that the brain does need energy to be awake, but it does not mean that all energy is lost when we are unconscious. There is still brain activity! So, this background or spontaneous activity could account for the “dark energy “ in the brain which means that high levels of energy is being used for a person during a non-attentive state as well. It could be hypothesised that this background energy in our non-attentive state may be bringing about our positive affirmations into reality. Yet, there is no research or background regarding this theory and it requires a large amount of evidence to back up such a theory. Nonetheless, it is important to continue to repeat positive affirmations to wire your brain to focus on it to come true.
